Smoke in the Air, Blood in the Streets: Gaza Before the Cease-Fire
U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry have announced that Israel and Hamas have agreed to a 72-hour humanitarian cease-fire in Gaza.
The cease-fire is scheduled to begin at 8 a.m. local time on Friday and continue through the weekend. Its stated goal is to allow Gazans a momentary reprieve to obtain urgently needed humanitarian relief, the parties said in a joint statement.
This cease-fire is critical to giving innocent civilians a much-needed reprieve from violence. During this period, civilians in Gaza will receive urgently needed humanitarian relief, and the opportunity to carry out vital functions, including burying the dead, taking care of the injured, and restocking food supplies. Overdue repairs on essential water and energy infrastructure could also continue during this period. Read more...

Public service whistleblowers 'treated shockingly', report finds
Whistleblowers who risk their careers to uncover wrongdoing within public services are being victimised by managers who nearly always escape sanction, a public accounts committee report will say on Friday.
MPs were told that only one senior manager who has victimised a whistleblower has ever faced disciplinary procedures, while many government departments are still failing to support employees who come forward in the public interest.

Proud Dad Jack Vale's iPhone Video of Daughter Singing Goes Viral
Like any proud parent, comedian Jack Vale is instinctively inclined to photograph his daughter's every impressive moment. So in mid-July, the YouTube prankster whipped out his iPhone camera and captured 12-year old Madysyn Rose singing Naughty Boy and Sam Smith's hit song "La La La."
Now the video has reached a massive 17.5 million Facebook News Feeds since July 18.
"It's very exciting, overwhelming and amazing," Madysyn told Mashable. "Singing is what I want to do for the rest of my life, and knowing that millions of people have heard me sing is awesome. It encourages me to keep doing what I love." Read more...

Tens of thousands of NHS patients are to be invited to donate their DNA for research as part of a project that aims to make the use of genetic data routine in the health service.

Homebuyers will need a £72,000 deposit if Tories win, says Labour
Homebuyers could need an average deposit of £72,000 to buy a typical home if the Conservatives get five more years, the shadow housing minister warns on Thursday.
Labour's Emma Reynolds will say in a speech in Nottingham that it will become even more difficult for people struggling to afford a home if David Cameron and George Osborne remain in charge of housing policy.

Europe adds Putin cronies, aide and bank to sanctions blacklist
The EU has added three longstanding "cronies" of Vladimir Putin, an important presidential aide and a Russian bank to its sanctions blacklist in the latest punitive measure aimed at Moscow for its involvement in fuelling the conflict in Ukraine.
The expanded list of people and entities subject to asset freezes and travel bans, agreed earlier this week by ambassadors from the 28 EU member states, marks the furthest EU sanctions have reached into Putin's inner circle. Leading members of rebel groups in eastern Ukraine and Crimea are also on the list. The addition of new targets follows the announcement on Tuesday of sweeping financial sanctions, an arms embargo and a freeze on exports of equipment to the Russian oil industry.

Hull hires Olympic ceremonies boss to head 2017 city of culture team
As head of ceremonies for the London 2012 Olympics, Martin Green had the initially unenviable job of convincing a sceptical public that the UK could follow Beijing's bombastic lead without completely embarrassing itself.
He defied the doubters by commissioning the Slumdog Millionaire director, Danny Boyle, to produce a mash-up of Mary Poppins, Dizzee Rascal, and a skydiving Queen, which delighted even the least patriotic viewers.

Nato unprepared for potential threats from Russia, say MPs
Nato is ill-prepared to confront new threats posed by Russia, and members of the western military alliance may not have the collective political will to take concerted action to deter an attack, a cross-party group of MPs warn on Thursday.
Nato command and control structures, the alliance's ability to predict and give adequate warning of a potential attack and the state of its forces are all seriously deficient, the Commons defence committee says.

Men who measure more than 102cm (40 inches) around the middle and not below the belly are five times more likely to be diagnosed with type 2 diabetes than men with a smaller waist, while women who measure more than 88cm (35 inches) are three times more likely to be diagnosed than others, according to advice from Public Health England.
People who are simply overweight, as well as those who are obese, are risking type 2 diabetes, which can lead to blindness, amputations and an early death, the public health body has warned.
