Smoke in the Air, Blood in the Streets: Gaza Before the Cease-Fire

0731-gaza-in-photos-13

U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry have announced that Israel and Hamas have agreed to a 72-hour humanitarian cease-fire in Gaza.

The cease-fire is scheduled to begin at 8 a.m. local time on Friday and continue through the weekend. Its stated goal is to allow Gazans a momentary reprieve to obtain urgently needed humanitarian relief, the parties said in a joint statement.

This cease-fire is critical to giving innocent civilians a much-needed reprieve from violence. During this period, civilians in Gaza will receive urgently needed humanitarian relief, and the opportunity to carry out vital functions, including burying the dead, taking care of the injured, and restocking food supplies. Overdue repairs on essential water and energy infrastructure could also continue during this period. Read more...

Europe adds Putin cronies, aide and bank to sanctions blacklist

Expanded list of those subject to EU asset freezes and travel bans is unprecedented in its reach into president's inner circle

The EU has added three longstanding "cronies" of Vladimir Putin, an important presidential aide and a Russian bank to its sanctions blacklist in the latest punitive measure aimed at Moscow for its involvement in fuelling the conflict in Ukraine.

The expanded list of people and entities subject to asset freezes and travel bans, agreed earlier this week by ambassadors from the 28 EU member states, marks the furthest EU sanctions have reached into Putin's inner circle. Leading members of rebel groups in eastern Ukraine and Crimea are also on the list. The addition of new targets follows the announcement on Tuesday of sweeping financial sanctions, an arms embargo and a freeze on exports of equipment to the Russian oil industry.
